Simmons and Zackery Leads Monarchs Past Stampede
Atlanta — 5/7/2018 — First year team, Atlanta Monarchs, makes a royal statement in their first game with a 92-61 win over the GA Stampede. After trailing by one point for only a few seconds in the first quarter, the Atlanta Monarchs’ quickly established and maintained their dominance over the GA Stampede.
Meighan Simmons led all scorers with 22 points, on 8 of 15 shooting from the field, 4 of 9 from behind the arc. Kellindra Zackery posted her first double double of the season with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Cherelle George made a major impact off the bench with 9 points, 6 assists and 5 steals.
Coach Marynell Meadors, proud of her team’s performance says, “They played really well for only having 5 ½ hours of practice last week.” However, Coach Meadors did mention that the team has much more work to do, pointing out that she was very pleased with the 1st-3rd quarters but wasn’t happy in the 4th because she felt the team took their foot off the gas, scoring only 15 points.
The Monarchs head to Nashville on the 12th to take on the Music City Icons. As signed players graduate and continue to roll in from overseas, the Monarchs will have their full team for their home opener on the 18th against the Dade County Lady Bulls.
